Dr. Sabita Sankar, VP of Business Development at HUMA.AI, sat down with me to discuss “human-centric AI” and how to automate healthcare through human language, with special focus on the applications for Medical Affairs, Clinical, Regulatory, and Commercial Pharma teams.
Here is a sneak peek of our conversation:
Q: Maybe we can give a brief explanation of the pre-data times. What were these Medical Affairs people doing? What were their problems? What were the challenges and what did they do with data? How were they interacting with the data that was around them?
A: This is actually a very good example because what happened during COVID was that everybody was doing everything remotely. They’re sitting at their desk in front of the computer and it’s very lonely. Think about it, a tool that can help and empower them so that they can get answers to their questions just at their fingertips, how powerful is that?
The way we built our platform is an easy-to-use platform. It’s an Alexa-like, question-and-answer platform. What are we trying to solve for them? They had to do everything manually. I’m so empathetic towards Medical Affairs because there’s a deluge of data. They have their CRM, they have all these insights data that are buried within the CRM, but it’s all unstructured data. The way they are doing it or they’ve been doing it for the longest time is doing it manually. There are group teams that generate monthly reports on the insights, then they look at it, and then they decide what to do next with those insights.
It’s not just those insights, there are multiple different data sources that they have to get business intelligence from. It’s private data plus they use public data like Pubmed, clinical trials, real-world data. It’s multiple different data sources that they have to get insights from. How difficult is that to do by a human being? That’s the power of machine learning because it can leverage that natural language processing to go into all these different data silos, unstructured data which is free-text notes, and get business intelligence out of it. It starts with the question they want to get answered. I will go through what is unique about our platform later, but that’s how are empowering medical affairs.
