In the latest episode of Impetus Digital‘s Fireside Chat, Cassie Solomon, CEO of The New Group Consulting, joined me for a deep dive into the future of innovation, digital technologies, and systems thinking in healthcare. Among many other things, we discussed how organizations can prepare for digital transformation and embrace the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Q: What sort of strategies are you working on with leaders today in terms of the effective implementation of technologies and platforms? Has that become a much larger part of your strategic conversations with people that you work with today?
A: I think I got into strategy because I was really frustrated by the kinds of strategic planning that I saw my clients doing and they were also frustrated. I think that the time of the static strategic plan is over. “I’m going to figure out what I’m going to be doing for the next three to five years. I’m going to push that out to my organization and then we’re going to go do it.” That’s not realistic anymore.
I drew on the futures-training that I did and the work that I’ve done in organizational change, and said “we have to start with scenario planning.” I want my clients to be imagining different futures at the beginning of the process at least so that we can then step back and say, “Okay, all of these are plausible futures for this organization. Do we see any common threads across the scenarios that we just built?”
Anything that is–my mentor would call it “robust”–these things, no matter what happens in the environment around us, we can feel confident. There are a number of those kinds of robust themes, as you can imagine, as we think about the digital transformation that most companies are grappling with. But, if you can’t imagine different possible futures, I think you’re not becoming a resilient team that can deal with change…
