Earlier this month, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared 2020 as the year of the nurse and the midwife. Their rationale was that nurses and midwives play a vital role in providing health services. They devote their lives to caring for pregnant women, infants, children, elderly patients, and everyone in between. They not only tend to sick patients but also do a lot of preventive work, from immunizations to giving health advice. Additionally, they are frequently the first, and sometimes only, point of care for many patients.
Importantly, the WHO estimated that we need 9 million additional nurses and midwives worldwide if we want universal health coverage to become a reality by 2030.
We have previously written a lot about various digital technologies that can help improve healthcare. However, this will never replace the up-close and personal, high-quality care by our amazing nurses and midwives. In fact, nurses are continuously listed as the most trusted profession, beating medical doctors and pharmacists by a mile.
Leveraging Nurses and Midwives for Insight-gathering
Some companies still consider physicians as the only key opinion leaders worth spending time and money on. However, many are starting to realize that nurses and midwives have a wealth of experience and insights to share. Further, because of their close proximity to patients and families, they have a massive influence on their patients’ treatment preferences.
At Impetus Digital, we are excited to celebrate nurses and midwives in 2020 (and beyond). We encourage brand teams to think outside the box and include non-physicians as their advisors and key opinion leaders. In addition, nurses are invaluable for getting input on things like patient journey maps, educational materials, and patient support programs.
